The Fall is much more than can be informed by any retelling of the ‘story’. Everything is done in perfect measure. It is set in a hospital in LA probably in the 1920’s judging from the cars and the wonderful sequence at the end (a la Cinema Paradiso). The scenes between Lee Pace and the amazing little actress Catinca Untaru have a strange quirky but natural rhythm, in stark contrast to the fantastic stories being told. Those tales, as we see them, are spectacular and display Tarsem’s awesome visual gift. The story, which Pace adds to each day, get darker as it goes along. Pace’s character wants to die, and he needs the girl’s assistance in getting morphine. The details of his stories are created from the imagination of the girl and built from the sights and people she sees around her in the hospital. She is there nursing a broken arm in which she carries a little box of treasures, which also makes it way into the story. Accompanied by a mesmerizing score it is as much about seeing and imagination as it is about storytelling. And don’t miss the opening sequence, which is a work of art in itself.
